New Extra Small / 250g Australia Post Satchels – FAQs

What is the new extra small / 250g satchel?

The extra small satchel is a new size in the Australia Post flat rate packaging range. It’s designed for parcels weighing up to 250 grams and is available for both Parcel Post and Express Post.

Can I access the 250g rate if I use my own packaging?

Yes. If you're using your own packaging and your parcel weighs 250g or less, the lower 250g domestic rate will apply automatically — no manual selection is required.

While there’s no fixed size for own packaging at this weight, standard size guidelines still apply.

Will I be charged based on actual or cubic weight?

MyPost Business rates are calculated using whichever is greater — the actual (dead) weight or the cubic weight — based on the parcel’s origin and destination.

What will the label show for 250g parcels?

The shipping label will always display 250g, even if the parcel weighs less. This is similar to other fixed-weight satchel options (like the 500g rate), where the printed label reflects the selected packaging tier.

How does the 250g rate compare to the 500g rate?

If you’re on Band 0 (no savings band) as of 1 July 2025:

  • Parcel Post 250g: $9.70
  • Parcel Post 500g: $11.15
  • Express Post 250g: $12.70
  • Express Post 500g: $14.65

Band discounts apply to the 250g rate just like other eligible postage options.

Does the 250g satchel count towards my MyPost Business savings band?

Yes. All 250g satchel purchases (whether flat rate or own packaging) count towards your spend total and are eligible for your band discount.

Note: Prepaid or non-activated padded mailers will count towards your spend total, but the band discount does not apply to those items.

Is tracking included with the 250g rate?

Yes. The same tracking experience available for other Australia Post services is included.

What happens if I under-declare the size or weight?

  • If you select the extra small padded mailer but use a larger size, Australia Post may charge the difference between what was declared and what was detected.
  • If you declare your parcel as 250g but it weighs more, you'll be charged the rate that matches the actual weight.
